Blog #3 (The Three Wishes by Ricardo E. Alegria)
This reading consist of a collection of stories from Puerto Rico that parents would tell their kids. Not being from the culture and no having heard these stories before, it is all new to me. And my judgement of them maybe clouded. For example the story about the ant in search for her leg, is easy to understand because it shows that god is the most powerful and strongest force out there and that me must all realize or figure that out. But the story with Juan Bobo, I am completely clueless about it. Is this story about a child who misbehaves and the mother cannot control him? If so, then it is not worth my time. The story about the witch, what is the moral of that story? Could it be that people are not to lie and alway have to tell the truth? Or is that when you find a witch, you should alway kill her. Other than that I can tell that there are lessons and morals behind these three stories and that they are meant for puerto rican children. Everyone has a different culture and the stories that are told in the culture are different every time. So it is reasonable that we do not interrupt the same stories the same way.
